The story of the Hawaiian Islands begins not in Hawaiʻi, but thousands of miles away in

. The ancestors of today’s Native Hawaiians were part of the great Austronesian expansion — some of the greatest seafarers in human history. Starting around 5,000–6,000 years ago, they sailed in sophisticated outrigger and double-hulled canoes, guided only by the stars, ocean swells, birds, and deep ancestral knowledge.

After generations of island-hopping through the Philippines, Indonesia, and Melanesia, they settled in the heart of Polynesia —

. From there, they made one of the most remarkable voyages in human history: sailing roughly 2,500 miles across the open Pacific to reach the Hawaiian Islands between approximately 300 and 800 CE, with the main wave of settlement around 400–600 CE. These voyages from the Society Islands (Tahiti area) and Marquesas were not one-way trips — evidence shows they continued traveling back and forth for centuries.

When the first Polynesians arrived, they encountered a raw, volcanic landscape still being shaped by fire. In Hawaiian tradition, this creative and destructive force is embodied by

Many Hawaiians still say that when Kīlauea erupts, “Pele is dancing.” Her presence reminds us that these islands are alive — constantly being born and reshaped. For visitors joining our Hilo shore excursions, seeing Kīlauea means witnessing the same forces that the ancient voyagers encountered when they first called these islands home.

Step into a realm where nature and heritage converge on Hawaii’s Big Island. Our intimate, small-group tours explore an array of iconic landmarks that have mesmerized visitors for generations. The island’s dramatic volcanic fields, cascading waterfalls, and verdant rainforests offer a naturally curated itinerary for anyone eager to connect with the raw beauty of the Hawaiian landscape.

Our small-group, van tours offer an immersive visual and cultural narrative that goes beyond typical sightseeing. Sure, we'll see what everyone wants when they visit the Big Island, but we'll also open up some hidden masterpieces that the large bus tours simply can't access. And we work hand-in-glove with cruiserliners to make the most of your day, maximizing port of call time and saving pennywise cruisers' money (more on that later).

Step into a lush rainforest where a magnificent waterfall cascades over vibrant green surroundings. Ideal for photography lovers and nature enthusiasts, with the half-mile walk through the lush garden loop, which frankly is as mesmerizing as the 442-foot waterfall. The quarter-mile loop paved trail through incredible tropical plant-life is almost as grand as the two waterfalls on this short walk, so this is a must stop to soak in the Hawai'i experience.

The Wailuki cascades over hardened lava rocks and through lush jungle vegetation, dropping precitipoulsly over a number of cliffs, including those that create the iconic Rainbow Falls and the Boiling Pots calderon.
Group sizes generally range from small intimate groups of 8-14. This isn't your typical cruiseline bus tour. We offer a more personalized experience, revealing sites large tour groups can't access in a time efficient manner.

Are the tours tailored for different experience levels?
Yes, tours are structured to engage novices and enthusiasts alike. Guides often adjust the depth of information to suit the audience’s familiarity with local heritage and geology.

           What local highlights are covered?
Highlights include iconic landscapes (think jungle landscapes and cascading waterfalls), volcanic formations, and culturally rich sites.

We offer an all-day, two-stage excursion that takes advantage of your cruise-liner benefits to save you money and minimize the stress of wondering what you'll be able to see and experience while docked. We do so by bundling the very popular morning tour of volcanos and lava tubes with our afternoon beach and waterfalls get-away, including turtle watching and optional snorkeling.

And in between our morning and afternoon tours we return you to your ship to enjoy their complimentary lunch and give you time to grab your beach attire and provisions, so that you don't have to lug them along for the morning excursion.

So here's a quick run-down on what you can expect:

Morning Tour: For your convenience, we meet you right at the Hilo port in our small-group van and immediately immerse you in the Big Island experience, beginning with a quick "coffee shop or photo op" (enjoy the best coffee in Hilo or get a quick selfie of your ship directly across a picturesque lagoon, which is home to many turtles).

The morning stage of our bundled, all-day tour focuses on the most unique natural wonder of Hawaii's youngest island: the fiery creative power of volcanoes. On active lava eruption days, we will take you to the very edge of Kilauea's caldera, to see up-close spewing lava and scorching steam. On days when the most active volcano on Earth lies dormant, we will whisk you to alternative sites that showcase the raw beauty of the largest island of the Hawai'i archipelago.

You will have the opportunity to walk through cavernous lava tubes, Mother Nature’s fiery underground passageways. We will also enjoy the lush jungles and water features that make Hawai'i paradise on Earth, and even a make quick stop or two (depending on time) to enjoy some local confectionaries grown and packaged right before your very eyes.

Lunch: Then we will bring you back to your ship to allow you time to grab the free onboard lunch, change clothes and snag your beach supplies (e.g., towel, sun-screen, bathing suit, etc.) before heading back out for part two of our daylong, bundled excursion.

Afternoon Tour: We will take you to a couple of Hilo highlights with short strolls to the most beautiful waterfalls on the island. Then you can soak up the sun on black-sand beaches and take a dip with our complimentary snorkel gear in clear, warm waters teeming with colorful sea life (that's when your underwater camera will pay dividends, so don't forget it in your cabin). Oh, and just a few yards from our favorite beach you'll be able to traverse ocean-hardened lava to discover hidden coves brimming with sun-bathing turtles.

You may choose to join either our morning or afternoon tours, or save a little by bundling both and experiencing all that the windward, lush side of the Big Island has to offer.

That's the difference between our intimate, small group tours and the on-shore bus tours booked through your cruise-line.. We tailor your Hilo stay to your liking and to the Big's ever-altering landscape, while taking full advantage of your ship's benefits to save you money and maximize your day.

The rainbow islands of Hawai'i are paradise on Earth, with year round tropical weather (just 100 miles from the Equator), warm ocean waters, lush jungles and spectacular beaches. But the youngest island among the archipelago is also the BIGGEST (able to fit all of its sister islands within its land mass).

Like its island-relatives, the island of Hawai'i too has a windward (easterly and green) and a leeward (westerly and sunnier) side. But the baby of the family is still growing, thanks to the most active volcano on Earth. The frequent eruptions of mighty Kilauea emits more lava flows than anywhere else.

It also is home to the highest and most concentrated number of diverse global climes on the planet. "The Big" has 11 distinct climate zones, ranging from tropical rainforest to alpine tundra, desert, savanna, and even snow-capped peaks standing nearly 14 thousand feet above sea-level. One can literally drive from palm-lined beaches to snowy mountains in an hour.

The Big island is also sparsely populated, with nature being its primary draw, not bustling city scenes. It is a peaceful slice of heaven on Earth ... well ... except for the red fiery stuff that continues to expand our island paradise.

We look forward to introducing you to this unique island gem. She is sure to amaze your senses and calm your soul.
