FAQs

  • What is the group size on your tours?

We operate small-group tours in our luxury van. Most tours run with 8–14 guests for a comfortable, personal experience. Private all-day tours are available for your group only.

  • Do you offer port pickup and back-to-ship guarantees?

Yes! All tours include convenient pickup and drop-off at the Hilo cruise port and other optional sites (e.g., hotels/airport). We guarantee cruisers will be back to your ship before all-aboard.

  • Do you only pickup at Hilo harbor?

No, we offer alternative pickup/drop-off locations, including the Hilo Hawaiin Hotel (and if you request: the Hilo airport, as well).  We also can drop you off in Hilo Town at the end of either our morning or afternoon tours.

  • Do you always go to Volcano National Park whether or not there are active eruptions?

Unlike all the bus  and most van tour businesses, we adapt daily based on current conditions to maximize your experience of the windward side of "the Big."

On active eruption days we prioritize Volcanoes National Park, because there's nothing on Earth like the mighty Kīlauea when Pele (the Hawaiian goddess of volcanoes and fire) is raging!

On quieter days we focus on beautiful, less crowded natural volcanic wonders, including the scenic rural coastal drive to Isaac Hale black sand beach, Lava Tree State Park, and a quiet but cavernous lava tube near Rainbow Falls — so you get to experience the unique nature of this ever-changing island no matter She is throwing at us on your day with Big Hawai'i Tours.

  • How do you handle volcano safety or closures of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park?

Safety is always our top priority. We monitor real-time updates from the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory and Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.  When vog (volcanic gas + particles), ash, or flying tephra (lava fragments) are present, we provide high-quality N95 masks free of charge.

When the HVNP  closes the park due to high levels of vog, elevated sulfur dioxide, or flying tephra during active eruptions, we immediately transition to less busy but equally stunning volcanic sites so you still enjoy what makes "the Big" globally unique without disappointment or risk.

  • What is included in the tours?

Professional local guide/driver, bottled water, all park entrance fees, and comfortable transportation in our premium van. Lunch is not included, but cruisers will be returned in time to enjoy their complimentary onboard lunch or optional restaurant locations in Hilo town. Time permitting, our morning tour will include optional snacks, candies and free samples at a world renowned macadamia nut orchard.

  • Are your tours suitable for families?

Yes! We love families. Our small-group format, age-specific pricing and flexible pacing work well for kids. Some walking is involved (easy short paths), but we can adjust for younger children. Not recommended for infants on very active volcano days due to potential fumes.

  • What is your child pricing policy?

    Big Hawai'i Tours welcomes families!

Under 3 years: Free (may have to sit on a parent’s lap).

Ages 4–14: Discounted youth rate (see individual tour prices).

    Ages 15+: Adult rate.

Parents are responsible for providing any car seats or boosters, although those will require purchase of Youth ticket for the additional seat.  Hawai'i law exempts tour van businesses from child restraint laws, so it really is the option of parents.

  • What should I bring?

Comfortable walking shoes, light jacket or layers (Volcano Park and some jungle walks can be cooler), sunscreen, hat, camera/phone, swimsuit/towel for the afternoon beach stop, and cash/card for optional purchases (mac nuts, souvenirs). We provide water.

  • What is the cancellation policy?

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before tour start. We also offer flexible options if your ship itinerary changes, and of course full refund for port cancellations.

  • Is the afternoon tour a good add-on?

Absolutely. The morning tour returns you to the ship or hotel for a late lunch and attire change, then the relaxed afternoon tour (Akaka Falls, scenic jungle drive, Richardson Black Sand Beach for turtles and optional swimming) is the perfect complement for Hilo visitors or passengers of cruiselines departing after 5:30PM. The bundle saves you money and gives you a full day of unique Big Island experiences and sites.

  • Do you offer fully private tours?

Yes — our Private All-Day Tour is perfect for families or groups who want the luxury van and professional tour guide exclusively to themselves.

  • What makes Big Hawai‘i Tours different?

We’re a local, family-operated, single premium van tour business focusing on Hilo cruise passengers and vacationing visitors who appreciate a professionally guided introduction of the Big Island's windward side. Our adaptive routing, luxury vehicle, small groups, and genuine local knowledge deliver a more personal and enjoyable experience than big-bus tours.
